Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Housing Scheme 2025 – Financial Support To Poor For House

According to the latest news on Kalaignar Kanavu Illam (KKI), the government is very close to completing its yearly target. Till now government has completed 81,811 houses. The remaining 18,071 house roofs have been laid, and 118 houses’ construction work is undergoing. In the previous 2024-25 year, Rs 3,039 crore was spent on the scheme. This scheme is specially targeting rural areas and the government help them with financial support. This financial support is used only in the construction of their house.

The Tamil Nadu Government launched the Kalaignar Kanavu illam scheme in honour of Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar. In this scheme, poor families living in rural areas in thatched Huts are provided with houses under the scheme. The government is working on the hut-free Tamil Nadu initiative, in which they are going to construct 1 lakh houses. The government’s vision is to construct 8 lakh concrete houses in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu by 2030. This is one of the biggest housing projects which is started by the Tamil Nadu Government. For this scheme state government passed a Rs 3500 crore budget in 2025-26.

The Poor rural population is also a very big issue in Tamil Nadu. To tackle the housing problem, the Tamil Nadu Government launched this scheme. In this scheme, the government will spend Rs 3.50 lakh per house, including coverage under the MGNREGA scheme.

The beneficiary will also get Rs 12000 to construct a toilet under the Swachh Bharat mission. In the financial year 2025-26, the government will construct 1 lakh houses by removing huts in rural areas. Rs 3.50 financial support provided to each beneficiary will be eligible for the scheme.

The government have a hut-free Tamil Nadu mission till 2030, in which they are going to build 8 lakh concrete houses in the rural areas in the next 6 years. In a recent survey, the government found that 789007 families live in the huts. They found that these families are eligible to receive assistance under the government housing scheme. In the first financial year 2024-25, the government of Tamil Nadu is going to sanction 1 lakh houses.

Budget For this scheme

The total cost of this project for this financial year is 3500 crore rupees. This amount will include 1200 crore from SCPAR, Rs 900 crore from PRI devolution grants, Rs 400 crore from Convergence of MGNREGS and Swachh Bharat Mission, and Rs 1000 crore from the state Grant, which will be used for the construction of 1 Lakh houses.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who are interested in this scheme have to fulfil and follow the eligibility criteria, which as mentioned below set by the Tamil Nadu Government:-

  • Permanent residents of Tamil Nadu are eligible for the scheme.
  • The applicant does not own any other house in Tamil Nadu State.
  • Economically weak section applicants are eligible for this scheme.
  • Should be living in huts, and his name is in the KVVT survey.

Benefits Of Scheme

In this scheme, financial support of Rs 3.50 Lakh will be provided to construct a concrete house for each beneficiary.

  • This scheme works under the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department of Tamil Nadu.
  • Under this scheme every year 1 lakh concrete houses will be constructed. Till 2030 government is to build houses all over the state.
  • Economically weak sections and poor families who live in huts are eligible for the scheme.
  • This is an initiative named Huts Free Tamil Nadu 2030, in which the government is to remove all the huts with concrete houses.
  • The government of Tamil Nadu will provide a minimum plinth area of 360 square feet, including a kitchen. In this area, 300 square feet will be covered with RCC roofing. The remaining area of 360 sq. ft. will be covered with RCC or any other type of non-flammable material according to the house owner’s choice.

Features Of Scheme

  • Out of all beneficiaries 40% will be reserved for scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST), and the remaining 60% is for other communities.
  • Priority will be given to the family living in huts and have any type of disability, sanitation workers, widows, transgender’s, agricultural labour and other tribal groups.
  • Distribution of the financial support, will be given through DBT.
  • The total budget allotted for this scheme is Rs 3500 crores.
  • The main reason for the Tamil Nadu government to launch the scheme is to make the state hut-free by 2030.
  • After the implementation of the scheme, families who cannot afford pukka (concrete houses) and live in Huts get financial support to build a new house.
